Can I add results from trading accounts with different currencies?
By Chart Reporter Reviewed 2 min read
The short answer
Adding monetary P&L from different account currencies does not produce a meaningful converted total. Chart Reporter preserves confirmed account denominations and labels unknown amounts as unconverted units. Use one known currency for monetary comparisons unless an explicit, documented conversion is performed.
A number needs its unit
A gain of 100 in one account and a loss of 80 in another does not automatically mean a combined gain of 20. That arithmetic only has an economic interpretation if the units are compatible. Counts can be combined under a consistent definition; monetary amounts need a shared denomination.
The same caution applies to broker-specific cent-account labels. A literal account unit such as USC is not automatically a USD amount. Do not divide values by 100 or relabel them based only on how familiar the symbol looks. Establish the actual denomination from the broker metadata.
Unknown currency is not a default currency
When confirmed currency metadata is missing, Chart Reporter uses unconverted account units instead of assuming dollars. Selecting one account does not make that missing metadata known. It narrows the sample but leaves the unit uncertainty intact.
For example, an old account record may have complete trade prices and results yet lack a reported denomination. It can still support an operational reconciliation or eligible price-R review. It should not silently become a USD performance claim simply because a dashboard needs a symbol beside the number.
Choose an honest multi-account comparison
For money-based measures, select a compatible account scope. Confirmed mixed-currency selections suppress monetary totals and associated comparisons in the current product. Read the scope notice and eligible count rather than trying to force an account-wide sum.
An external converted analysis needs a stated target currency, exchange-rate source, conversion date convention and handling for deposits, withdrawals and cent units. Those choices are additional analysis, not a property of the original journal numbers. If using R to compare records instead, confirm that each R value uses a compatible risk definition and that missing initial risk does not distort which trades are included.
