Does the Chart Reporter EA need Algo Trading enabled?
By Chart Reporter Reviewed 2 min read
The short answer
The Chart Reporter reporting EA does not need Algo Trading enabled. It reads account activity and sends journal data; it does not open, modify or close trades. WebRequest permission, a valid reporter key and a running terminal are the relevant setup checks.
An Expert Advisor is a program type
The term Expert Advisor can suggest a trading robot, but it also describes the type of MT5 program used for reporting. The program's actual responsibilities matter more than that label. Chart Reporter's EA provides a reporting connection between the terminal and your journal.
It is useful to separate three permissions in your mental model: signing into the broker terminal, allowing an EA to contact a web destination, and allowing a program to trade. They are different capabilities. Enabling trade execution is not the documented remedy for a Chart Reporter reporting failure.
Check the reporting requirements
In desktop MT5, confirm that the reporter is attached to a chart for the intended account. Check that https://api.chartreporter.com is permitted in the terminal's WebRequest list and that the EA has the current Chart Reporter API key. The terminal must be running and connected.
For example, a terminal can be logged into the correct account while the reporting key has become stale after rotation. Enabling Algo Trading would not repair that authentication mismatch. Update the key in the reporter's inputs, check the Experts and Journal logs, and look for a fresh terminal heartbeat in the dashboard.
Keep other programs outside this conclusion
This permission guidance applies to the Chart Reporter reporting EA. Other EAs on your terminal may place orders and have different requirements. Do not generalise the reporting setup into a claim that every EA can function without execution permissions.
Likewise, a separate AI tool connected directly to terminal trading functions may have authority that Chart Reporter does not expose. Review each connection individually. A reporting-only journal is still sensitive because trade history can reveal positions and strategy behaviour. Protect its key, use the intended account, and revoke connections you no longer need.
