What is the difference between a strategy and a tag in a trading journal?

The short answer

A strategy identifies the process you intend to evaluate; a tag describes an attribute or review observation. Clear definitions help keep comparisons consistent. Chart Reporter supports strategy assignment rules using MT5 magic numbers or entry comments, while tags provide additional review context.

Give each label a defined job

Imagine a named strategy used across several instruments and sessions. Its identity should stay stable enough for you to review the same process over time. Tags can then describe features such as a planned news restriction or a review category without fragmenting that identity.

Write a short definition for each important tag and the evidence required to apply it. A label that means one thing in April and another in May does not create a comparable history. Likewise, a tag added after seeing the result should not masquerade as information available before entry.

Understand automatic strategy assignment

In Chart Reporter, strategy rules can match a magic number or an entry comment. Matching is case-sensitive and applies to the complete value, with question-mark and asterisk wildcards available. When both rules exist, either matching rule can assign the trade.

Test a narrow rule against known examples before applying a broad wildcard. If you choose to sync historical matching trades, review the affected sample afterward. An automatic classification is an operational rule, not independent evidence that the trades followed the intended strategy. The underlying entry process still needs inspection.

Keep analysis separate from relabelling

Changing classification after inspecting results can change a strategy's reported history. Record meaningful definition changes and avoid moving inconvenient losses out of a group just to improve its statistics. Include unclassified records in your coverage checks.

For a useful comparison, keep date, account, currency and remaining filters consistent while varying the intended strategy or tag. Report the group counts and eligibility limits alongside the headline metric. If a classification save fails during a guided review, resolve it before progressing so the written finding and stored record do not silently diverge.
