When should I use a screenshot instead of trade replay?

The short answer

A screenshot preserves a particular visual observation; replay explores available broker candles over time. They answer overlapping but different questions. Neither should be used to claim detail that was not captured, and a later image should not be labelled as the trader's original entry view.

Use screenshots for observed visual context

A contemporaneous screenshot can preserve annotations, indicator presentation or a layout that helps explain a decision. Record its capture time and relationship to the trade. An image without that context can be easy to interpret as evidence of something it did not actually show.

Screenshots also have limits. A still image does not expose every subsequent price movement, and visible annotations do not prove they existed before the order. Distinguish a captured original from a review image marked up later. Label fictional demonstration images clearly when using them to explain the product.

Use replay for available price-path context

Chart Reporter replay reads broker candles captured through the EA. It can reveal the available sequence of bars around a trade and help situate entries and exits. It does not blend in a second market feed to create missing detail.

If the requested resolution is unavailable, a coarser supported interval may provide context. That should remain a coarser reconstruction, not an implied tick-by-tick recording. A candle high and low do not establish the exact order of intrabar events, and a gap is a limit on the evidence.

Combine them with the execution record

For a review of a stop change, start with the recorded change event. Use the screenshot to explain the visible decision context and replay to explore the available surrounding bars. Keep the original stop distinct from the final level.

When sources disagree or coverage is incomplete, write that uncertainty into the note rather than forcing a single confident narrative. A journal is more useful when it preserves the difference between execution facts, captured images and retrospective interpretation. Adding more media does not remove the need to verify account, symbol, timeframe and capture date.
