Is importing MT5 history the same as recording trades live?

By Chart Reporter Reviewed 2 min read

The short answer

History import and live reporting can both contribute journal records, but they do not guarantee identical context. An old trade may have a usable execution record without screenshots or replay candles. Evaluate the coverage of each data type instead of treating import completion as complete reconstruction.

Separate the record from its context

A journal record describes the trade: account, instrument, times, direction, volume and recorded result. Review context adds information such as chart candles, screenshots, notes or captured conditions. The existence of one does not prove the availability of all the others.

Consider a position closed before the reporter was installed. Broker history may provide facts needed for the trade record, but that does not establish that a contemporaneous screenshot exists. A screenshot created today would show a later observation, not necessarily what the trader saw when deciding to enter.

Inspect replay coverage explicitly

Chart Reporter replay uses broker candles captured through the EA. If an interval is unavailable, the app can check coarser supported intervals. A coarser view can provide context without supplying the detail of the originally requested resolution.

This distinction matters when interpreting excursions or the sequence inside a candle. If only a larger interval is available, do not describe the view as a tick-perfect reconstruction. A gap notice is information about the evidence, not a cosmetic problem to hide. Completion of trade-history sync also does not prove that pending candle uploads have finished.

Design your first review around available evidence

Start with record reconciliation: check account, ticket, timestamps, final state and net result. Then identify which trades have sufficient chart context for the particular question you want to ask. Keep trades without that context visible in the overall record while excluding them from calculations that genuinely require it.

If historical candles are pending, keep the reporter connected and follow the recovery guidance for the traded symbol and date range. Availability depends on broker history and the reporting environment, so no fixed completion time is promised. Notes should distinguish recorded facts from later recollections and from assumptions made to fill a gap.
