Is the MT5 Journal tab the same as a trading journal?
By Chart Reporter Reviewed 2 min read
The short answer
The MT5 Journal and Experts tabs help diagnose terminal and EA activity. A trading journal organises trade records and review context across a chosen sample. Both are useful, but a connection log is not a substitute for reconciled trade results, notes and performance definitions.
Choose the tool that matches the question
If the question is why an EA cannot report, terminal logs are an appropriate starting point. They can expose permission, network or authentication messages. If the question is how completed trades performed after costs, you need a structured trade sample and an explicit calculation.
The names can create confusion because both use the word journal. Searching for an MT5 journal might mean finding a terminal log, reviewing account history or choosing a separate trading-journal application. Decide which outcome you need before following instructions for a different task.
Use logs to establish operational evidence
For a reporter issue, note the terminal instance, account, time and error message. Check the Experts and Journal tabs around the relevant period rather than collecting an unrelated day of output. Pair that with Chart Reporter's terminal last-seen status.
A log entry showing a request attempt does not itself prove that every trade was stored successfully. Conversely, the absence of a new trade in a filtered dashboard does not establish a network failure. Trace a known record from its broker identity into the intended account and date window. That gives each system a specific role in the diagnosis.
Use the trading journal for a repeatable review
A review needs a defined sample, consistent net P&L, an account currency and a way to attach your observations. The execution record answers what was reported; notes explain what you believed or intended. Keeping these separate makes later review more useful than a collection of screenshots alone.
When escalating a problem, send the relevant diagnostic context without passwords or reporting keys. When evaluating performance, preserve the filters and calculation definitions instead of quoting a terminal message as proof of an outcome. Connecting these two disciplines improves traceability without pretending that either tool answers every question.
